Theory of Change

Kathy Khoa (summer jobs program associate for BTS) designed the visualizations for our Theory of Change. We are proud of the way she took our words and turned them into a clear representation of what we do and why we do it. Here she shares her thoughts and the process she went through.

“The Theory of Change (TOC) was a project that I had worked on for several weeks and produced over 50 paper and digital drafts. Initially, I was provided with a table of information that I had to produce visuals for. The task of organizing the information and creating a display that fits cohesively was more challenging than I had expected.”

My favourite part was producing the visuals for the TOC because I had the freedom to make it exactly how I wanted. There was a lot of trial and error and many things had to be changed and adjusted as I went along. The week I had to transform my pencil drawing into a digital drawing was the most difficult for me. I found digital art much more frustrating and difficult than pencil sketching and watercolour due to my inability to properly manipulate and properly use my digital art tools.

While looking at tutorials and googling how I could produce a digital art piece, I stumbled across a video on Youtube called The Bare Maximum | Steve Lacy | TEDxTeen. For me, photoshop was too expensive and this video reminded me to get creative with the materials and programs that I did have access to. Once I got over the initial hump of frustration it became so fun and I am very happy with what I was able to produce with the help of Jessica.”
