Hello World and Many Thanks Part II

Hello Everyone!

This blog post is my official greeting as I begin another summer of work with Beat the Streets Toronto. Last summer I was fortunate enough to have a similar experience learning about the ins and outs of non-profit work. This summer holds the promise of more learning and the opportunity to expand beyond the responsibilities I fulfilled last summer.

Many thanks

I would like to begin by thanking Canada Summer Jobs for the funding that makes the work I am doing this summer possible. The funding that they provide aids me and other youth as we strive to give back to our communities while still managing the expenses of being university students.

More about me

My name is Simi Jayeoba and I am a 4th year student at McMaster University studying Engineering Physics. I am also one of the captains of our varsity wrestling team. Next year will mark my seventh year wrestling and boy does time fly!

I first became involved with Beat the Streets Toronto as a curious 10th grader looking to get as good as possible at wrestling. Their community practices became regular for me over the next three years before graduating high school. Through my years of wrestling, I have experienced a lot of what has shaped me into the young woman that I am today.

Summer Vision

My focus for the upcoming summer will be developing a mentorship program for young students involved in the sport of wrestling. I hope that this work will have a great impact in supporting young athletes as they become the best versions of themselves.

Learning and growing will be inescapable as I make the most of this position. I can already see that the many skills I will gain this summer will be transferable anywhere that I go in life. Leadership, collecting and synthesizing data, drafting reports, creating interactive resources - these are just some of the abilities I will be walking away with.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to do work that is so meaningful to me as a student, athlete, and member of my community. Furthermore, I know that the experiences and growth I have undergone in my own life will aid me as I work together with my team to create something great.”

Especially noting the current circumstances many of us are experiencing, I am nothing less than optimistic and very grateful to be doing work that I find fulfilling.

More from me soon,

Simi Jayeoba
