BTS Team

Leadership

Neal Ewers

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I have many people to thank for support in my process of beating the inner city streets of Toronto and going on to attain a degree at Simon Fraser University and having a successful Wrestling Career on the national team… I can think of no better way than to replicate this process for other youth on similar paths with our BTS Toronto Programs.

  • Here at BTS, I facilitate programs to build up the quality of wrestling in the GTA. Thus giving our youth the means to become better wrestlers and increasing their chances of pursuing post-secondary education and receiving athletic scholarships. At BTS Toronto we provide not only encouragement, we also provide programs for our youth to be successful as well.

Development & Communications

Jessica Marasovic

I graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours BA, then continued at Humber College with an International Project Management Post-graduate certificate. I began working in the non-profit and human rights sector in 2002 and have loved every minute of it.

  • I had the privilege of travelling the world and working at numerous engaging and awesome NGOs and international organizations like the United Nations International Trade Centre. I've also worked as a consultant and service provider for various non-profits through web development, grant writing and other project management services.

It's an honour working with this team, with the youth who inspire me every day and with our generous partners who make all this possible.

Coaches & Facilitators

Andrew Tyson

LEVEL UP COACH

I began my athletic career in high school playing football and Wrestling in the Greater Kansas City Area of the United States. I excelled predominantly in Wrestling placing 3rd in Kansas 6A State Championships after only competing for 3 years while attending Shawnee Mission South in Overland Park Kansas. After Highschool I attended Rockhurst University where I received my Bachelor’s in economics and my Master’s in Business Administration.

  • While pursuing my Master’s, I began training and competing in Amateur Mixed Martial Arts under Title Boxing Club in Kansas City and later American Top Team KC and Glory MMA. As an amateur, I went 11-0 in Mixed Martial Arts and was the 2nd Ranked Lightweight Amateur in the nation in 2010 according to the ISCF. Due to injury, I took 3 years off from the sport in which I began my career as a trainer at Title Boxing Club in Kansas City where I was certified in Boxing Fitness under Title Boxing Club.

In 2014 I decided to return to Mixed Martial Arts as a Pro featherweight where I have since gone 5-0 as a Professional Mixed Martial Artist. I have also received my Jiu-Jitsu blue belt under Nova Uniao Black Belt, Brazilian National Champion and Canadian National Champion Igor Mocaiber. Many years of training with some of the best athletes in the Mid Western United States and coming back from multiple injuries has taught me the importance of an overall balanced fitness regimen. I have both experienced and taught others the benefits of using boxing and other martial arts such as Jiu-Jitsu as part of an overall fitness journey that attains more than just aesthetics as a goal. True health comes from a mutual growth of not only the body and muscles but the mind as well. It has been a true blessing to share my knowledge and love of fitness with so many people ranging from kids as young as 6 years old to adults of all ages.

Navreet Chadde

YOU GROW GIRL COACH

I was first introduced into the martial arts world by my older brother when I was 15 years old. I was bullied a lot growing up, so my brother decided to teach me Muay Thai/ kickboxing as self-defence and because he needed a partner to practice techniques on. Not long after, I started taking Muay Thai classes.

  • I started training consistently in my third year of university while studying Kinesiology. With Kinesiology being the study of human movement, I naturally gravitated to my roots of Muay Thai, “the art of 8 limbs.” I have been studying and applying Muay Thai/ kickboxing techniques consistently for three years. I have been a kickboxing coach for two years. I teach group kickboxing classes to women who want to learn and get fit.

I have also been restling/grappling for about a year with coach Neal at Beat the Streets Toronto. Through him I was given the opportunity to teach kickboxing in the "You Grow Girl" program for Beat the Streets, which I am extremely grateful for.

I have high hopes of competing in the near future. I aspire to be a great Mixed Martial Artist, but I understand that it’s a journey and I still have much to learn.

I believe that Martial Arts and sports in general have so many positive and beneficial qualities to them that not many people realize. Many of these teachings can be applied to job setting and are important life skills young people should learn.

So far, Mixed Martial Arts and sport has taught me to be patient with myself; learning a new technique can take time, understand that it is a journey not a race. Remain respectful and humble; your peers, partners and opponents could excel in some areas that you don’t, but it’s okay, don’t let your ego get in the way. Acknowledge and work on your weaknesses. Repetition creates the master; to learn something and excel at it you must do it over and over again. Be resilient; never give up whether it’s during a fight/ match or learning a new technique. Be confident in your abilities; the hard-work you put into training will show during your performance, walk in with confidence.

I think Beat the Streets is very important especially after the pandemic, where no one placed an emphasis on how important sports and movement is in the lives of the next generation. The programs this charity provides, will help the youth better understand the importance of keeping the mind and body healthy and ultimately it will lead to a generation of stable and healthy individuals.

Tarnpreet Saroya

Hi, I’m Tarnpreet!

I started wrestling when I was 9 years old. • Hi, I’m Tarnpreet!

Wrestling has given me opportunities I couldn't have dreamt of such as travelling to countries as peaceful as Japan, as historical as Poland, as free as the United States, and as unapologetic as Mexico. Wrestling has given me the best relationships that I know will last a lifetime! Wrestling makes me feel strong, challenges me, and teaches me I a capable of anything I put my mind to. It teaches me my failures don't define me, they help me. Wrestling gives me happiness, tears, hardships, struggles and triumphs. Wrestling makes me, me.

It feels great to be making such a big impact on student’s lives with the Wrestle4Fun program. Students come into gym class every day looking forward to learning new wrestling skills and social-emotional activities.

Working with BTST thus far has been unforgettable. I am incredibly grateful and excited for what is to come! Words cannot describe how thankful I am Ontario Trillium Foundation and Beat The Streets Toronto!

P.S. The last time Coach Xyon and I wrestled I went unscored on for the duration of the match defeating him 8-0.

Arely Torales

EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT

The last time I took this position I had a blast working on developing some of the BTST programs. I am very excited to work with the team again this year. Here at Beat the Streets, we adapt new transferable skills every day in all the programs we have. I have been involved with BTS for a few years now and I enjoy being part of this great community. Creating programs for low-income students and delivering these programs gives me a great sense of satisfaction knowing that we are helping the growth of the youths in our communities. My end goal this summer is to help BTST develop their programs, as well as improve my software skills, and organization skills. BTST is working on great things and I am overjoyed to be a part of it this summer.
