How Wrestling Has Impacted Our Lives

Hi There!

Tarleen and Tarn back again!!

Wrestling has impacted our lives by supporting us to reach our full potential and become the individuals that we are today. It has allowed us to be confident, leaders, and courageous.

When we first joined wrestling 7 years ago we genuinely enjoyed it, we cried a lot but we definitely enjoyed it.  As little girls we loved the competitiveness, pushing our bodies and just being and doing our best. What we can say is not much has changed. We wake up on time every day and work hard to improve 1% and become finer athletes because we know that good results will follow automatically. However, there are definitely some days that we wake up and don’t shine the brightest but we believe that we're not going to feel our 100 every day and sometimes showing up and doing our best is enough.

Wrestling has truly allowed us to overcome many hurdles in our life. It has allowed us to recognize if we want to be the successful wrestlers that we can be, we can no longer have peers that have different intentions. We have realized the people who accompany us should be reflections of ourselves and should help us get closer to our goals. We also learned that feeling sorry for ourselves when it gets tough will get us nowhere. Instead, owning up to our actions and moving forward is the right way to go.

Our lives as wrestlers are definitely challenging, but it all pays off in the end. Wrestling to us is a lifestyle we eat, sleep, and breathe wrestling. We think about it constantly. We have made many sacrifices to be the greatest. Wrestling is a mental sport. You have to be mentally tough to compete on the mat. There are many challenges we face and to overcome them, we push ourselves to the maximum. We go through every day aiming to have a positive and learning attitude and be kind to others.

At wrestling practices we give it our all, we physically and mentally beat the crap out of each other, but at the end of practice, we are sisters again. There is no better feeling than getting a great grind session in. We push each other so hard that most nights our practices do end in tears. We know through experience it takes a different breed to be a wrestler. To us wrestling isn’t just about cutting weight and practicing, it’s about the grind and greatness you achieve while doing this sport.

Wrestling really exposed us to a whole new, positive environment. We had the privilege to travel to Japan and Poland as well as all over the USA, and Canada.  We met many new people and made many new friends. We will forever be grateful to our parents and god for introducing us to such an amazing sport that provides so many opportunities. We are only beginning to see just how much the sport of wrestling has given back to us.

In the future, I (Tarleen) hope to become a pharmacist and one day own my very own pharmacy.  with all the skills and life lessons I have learned through wrestling. I know I am capable and will achieve that goal for myself. I (Tarnpreet) want to pursue Physiotherapy and open up my own Physiotherapy. I also plan on utilizing all the skills and lessons I have learned on the mat into my everyday life now and in the future.

Victoria Anthony, college national championships for Simon Fraser University, NWCA National Duals Women’s title2014 Pan American Champion in the 48 kg division says that “Wrestling has given me all the best things in my life! I’ve graduated from an international university for nearly free, I’ve traveled to 50 countries, I’ve met my best friends in the world, and I’ve learned all the lessons I need to succeed in the rest of life because of wrestling.”

Tyler Barry, a wrestler at Cobra Wrestling Club says “Wrestling impacts my everyday life because it has become my everything. I’m always thinking about how I can improve myself as a person and as a wrestler. Wrestling has taught me many discipline and respect skills towards other people.”
