Origin and History

Yoga was developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India over 5,000 years ago. Yoga was used as a spiritual practice to train the body and mind to become aware of their own nature. The purpose of yoga is to cultivate discernment, awareness, self-regulation and higher consciousness in the individual.



Equipment Used

The practise of Yoga requires mats and small props to help support the practitioner.



Movements

Yoga poses are held for prolonged times to release muscle tension. Long series of poses are repeated consecutively, to warm up the body and allow for increased range of motion.



Mind-Body Connection

Yoga session starts with establishing an intention for the practice and the session ends with guided meditation and relaxation. Goals are set to clear the mind and surrender to the movement.



Purpose

The first purpose of yoga was for spiritual development practices to train one’s body and mind to self observe and become aware of their own nature. Yoga’s purpose was to also promote perception, awareness, self regulate and improve consciousness in an individual.



Benefits

Yoga is known to provide many benefits, some of which include, increased flexibility, increased, muscle strength, and tone. Some more benefits are improved respiration, energy and vitality, maintaining a balanced metabolism, weight reduction, cardio and circulatory health. Yoga also improves athletic performance, protection from injury, and improves balance. Furthermore, yoga is known to support joint health, prevent back pain, and teach better breathing. Yoga fosters mental calmness, reduces your stress level, and may help you lose weight.
