What are the short-term and long-term benefits of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)?

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING IS THE ABILITY TO REGULATE ONE’S THOUGHTS, EMOTIONS, AND BEHAVIOURS IN THEIR EVERYDAY LIFE.

If you read the last post in this series about what SEL is, you may be wondering what the benefits are and if these benefits hold up years down the line.

Social-emotional learning provides students numerous long-term and short-term benefits that are backed by a host of meta-analyses and reports.

The benefits of SEL programs can be seen almost immediately during the duration of the program—with students being 42% less likely to say they were involved in physical violence—but that’s not all. Enrolling your children and students into SEL programs can positively impact them up to 18 years later on academics, conduct problems, emotional distress, and drug use.

Taking part in SEL programs also provides a huge monetary return—every dollar invested in SEL programs is returned 11-fold. Furthermore, SEL programs set students up for academic achievement by teaching them long-term transferable skills—with students reporting an 11-percentile point gain in their academic performance.

The benefits of SEL are evidence-based and long-term, making SEL an amazing investment for our youth and children!

Policymakers, educators, and the public can contribute to healthy development of children by supporting the
incorporation of evidence-based SEL programming into standard educational practice.
