What about SEL do participants learn at BTST?

You’ve probably already seen many different blog posts on our website and Instagram and Facebook posts talking about the importance of Social-emotional learning and the benefits of it, however, what about SEL does Beat the streets teach in its programs and what are the expected outcomes of SEL?

To reiterate what SEL is, Social-emotional learning is the “process of acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs to identify and manage emotions; to care about others; to make good decisions; to behave ethically and responsibly; to develop positive relationships and to avoid negative behaviours”. As you probably already know, SEL is at the core of all our programs and through SEL our aim as a charity is to build resilient, confident and active youth and provide them with lifelong skills that will set them up for future success.

To fulfill our purpose as a charity, Beat the streets Toronto offers four outstanding free access programs: Wrestle 4 fun (damentals), Level up, You grow girl & Work it and in each, BTST incorporates SEL in different ways to achieve its goal of equipping children and youth with the necessary skills to become strong contributors to society and to effectively manage and navigate through new challenges.

The chart below indicates what BTST teaches about SEL in each of its programs.

Now that we’ve looked at how BTST teaches social-emotional learning in its programs, let’s look at the expected outcomes of youth and children that are taught SEL and how SEL has a positive effect on them?

Before you take a look at the list below, keep in mind that the list below only highlights the expected outcomes and that the expected outcomes of learning SEL on children and on youth varies from child to child and also that the outcomes below are only a few of many more positive outcomes!

Children and youth that are taught SEL are expected to experience:
