OTF-funded Wrestle 4 Fun program wraps up year 2 with more than 4,800 children served

Beat the Streets would like to sincerely thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for their continuous support of our organization and our unique Wrestle 4 Fun program. Since 2021, over 7,429 students have experienced the joy of wrestling and social-emotional learning due to their generosity.

Wrestle 4 Fun promotes physical activity and social-emotional learning through wrestling, a sport that emphasizes strength, agility, and teamwork. Over 25 weeks, with the support of the OTF, we provided over 550 hours of wrestling and social-emotional learning activities to more than 4,800 children in 14 schools in priority neighbourhoods. It was a tremendous success, with many children eager to participate and discovering a new interest in wrestling. 70% of students surveyed would want to participate in the program again!

The students loved participating, and those who were reluctant to try the program initially grew to love the games and activities played. We got to see many students get out of their comfort zone and attempt exercises they did not believe they could do previously. Through the games, exercises and activities, the students developed physical and social/emotional skills while still having fun.

Two of the schools we visited have already requested after-school wrestling programs, and 77% of teachers surveyed are interested in starting one. It demonstrates our program's impact on the children we worked with and its positive impact on their physical and emotional well-being. Additionally, it proves the transformative power of sports.

In Beat the Streets, we believe physical activity contributes to a healthy lifestyle and is essential to building strong, vibrant, and resilient communities. We are proud to partner with the Ontario Trillium Foundation in empowering children and youth to realize their full potential.

One of our favourite parts of the program was observing students throughout our time at the schools. It was amazing to see students who did not believe in their physical abilities at the beginning of the week be able to do front rolls, cartwheels and various other exercises by the end.
